银元，起源于15世纪，始铸于欧洲，16世纪传入中国，光绪年间开始铸造但直到民国时期才正式大量发行成为国币。在100多年的时间里在中国流通的银元多达上千种，版本更是多达万余种，可以说是近代币种的一个“大家族”。

1911年辛亥革命，清朝宣统皇帝宣布退位，持续两千多年的封建制度轰然落幕，1912年元月，中华民国政府成立，国父孙中山就任中华民国临时大总统，并颁布“临时大总统令”，取样清代铜币模本，鼓励铸造纪念币——中华民国开国纪念币。湖南省造双旗当制钱二十文，就是产生于这一历史时期。

It was in this historical period that Hunan Province built two flags to make twenty pieces of money.
在民国成立后，铜元仍继续大量流通使用。1914年，铜元正式改称“铜币”，民国发行的铜币与清最大的区别是龙纹被换成了由稻穗组成的嘉禾纹。各省铸造的铜元大多为两面叉的国旗图案，有标注各省造的，并有“开国纪念币”或“中华民国铜币”字样。
